Dog Clicker Training
Stop Using Cruel Methods to Train Your
Dog!
Dog clicker training has been around for
quite some time. There seems to be quite a bit of
controversy surrounding it – especially amongst the camp
that believes in "corrective" training (which is another
word for cruel and unusual punishment).
There also seems to be controversy as to whether or not it
really works. Before I get into whether dog clicker training
really works, let me explain to you what dog clicker training
is and why it is the best dog training method to use if you're
against "corrective" dog training methods.

What is Dog Clicker Training?
Dog clicker training is a reward based type training wherein
desirable behavior is marked with a clicker. When the dog does
the desired behavior, a distinct click sound is made which lets
the dog know that he is doing the correct behavior. He then
gets a reward as positive
reinforcement.
Who Benefits Most From Dog Clicker
Training?
Clicker training is for people who
hate to use punitive measures in dog training. There are
many dog training methods that are "corrective", which to
me is just another name for "cruel punishment." So if you
are against any form of "corrective" training, then dog
clicker training is for you.
Does Dog Clicker Training Work?
Dog clicker training absolutely works. Why? It works because unlike word
cues, dog clicker training does not convey emotion such as
approval or disapproval.
That means that hearing the clicker provides a non-emotional
marker so your dog always receives the same information
consistently.
Also, the clicker sound is a distinct sound from other sounds
in the environment.
The dog easily remembers the desired behavior from one day to
the next. That
makes training your dog easy and quick.
Another reason why
dog clicker training works is because when you click on the
desired behavior at the exact time the behavior is performed,
that behavior is pinpointed so the dog knows exactly what
behavior is expected.
No More Punitive Dog Training Sessions
Since dog clicker training is not punishment based, even
puppies a few weeks old can be trained. Also, once the behavior is
learned you don’t need to use the clicker for that behavior
(but you should still give the dog a treat or
reward).
If you decide that you want to fine tune a behavior or teach
your dog a new behavior, just use the clicker.
No Experience Necessary
Many people think that experience is necessary to clicker train
their dog. That is
not the case. If
you learn dog clicker training from an experienced dog trainer
or from instructions on the label of the clicker, you will
learn the techniques quickly and easily.
One aspect of dog clicker training that requires practice and
may take time to master is timing the clicking with the exact
behavior you want your dog to display.
Will it Work for My Stubborn Dog?
Dog clicker training can work on all dogs of all breeds and
ages including rescues (which can be difficult to train because
of the history of the dog), champions, and
purebreds.
Motivating Your Dog
Because dog clicker training relies heavily on things that
highly motivate your dog to act in the way you want him to act,
giving your dog his favorite treat (in small amounts) will keep
him highly motivated.
Make sure whatever you give your dog as the reward is something
the dog really enjoys. It doesn’t have to be food either. It
can be a game of tug of war (which my dog Lily loves). Stop
training your dog with traditional cruel methods and start
using humane methods like dog
